Education – Assessment and Progress

I am sure you’re aware that we are in Wales following a New Curriculum since September 2022, the Curriculum for Wales. As part of this change, there has been a change in how we share information with you about your child’s development whilst at Ysgol Penybryn. We will report on learners’ progress, including:

  • their well-being
  • information on key progress and learning
  • key progression needs, the next steps to support their progression, and advice on how parents can support that progress.

You can see that there is a big emphasis on progress rather than attainment which allows us as a school to focus on what is vital to the individual learner rather than trying to reach a common target for all learners.

Here’s how we interpret progress:

  • Progress – development in skills, learning, knowledge or understanding at a suitable stage of learning for the learner.
  • Has there been progress (forward movement in learning / improvement / strengthening)?
  • Continuous assessment to monitor progress.
  • Day-to-day provision is designed for the needs of the learner to maximise progress for the individual learner.
  • The progress of 2 learners is not comparable as it is unique to an individual learner.

You will receive a termly progress report where we will use the colour code below:

Concern about the progress of your child Your child has made some progress. .
Expected progress for your child Your child has made suitable progress.
Higher than expected progress for your child Your child has made higher than expected progress.
Exceptional progress for your child Your child has made progress that is far than expected – very exceptional.

For attendance, we will use the below colour code:

Absent for over a month of school <90%
Absent for up to a month of school 90% – 92%
Up to the school target 92.1% – 94.9%
Above school target 95% – 97.9%
Good / Impressive / Perfect 98% – 100%

We hope you will appreciate our new approach to communicating  your child’s progress and we invite any feedback to ensure continuous improvements.
